A recent Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) report reveals that foreign students filed 13,660 asylum claims in Canada between January 1 and September 30, 2024.

Comparatively, nearly 12,000 asylum claims were made by international students in 2023 – a massive spike from a mere 1,810 claims in 2018.

According to IRCC data, the nations with the most student claims for permits and extensions this year are India, Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller wrote to The College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, raising concerns about the increased number of overseas students requesting asylum in Canada.

The CICC, a Canadian regulatory institution, regulates immigration and citizenship consultants and international student counselors.

Asylum in Canada

Though Marc Miller complimented CICC for shutting down 3,000 websites run by unlicensed practitioners, he expressed concern that students were being advised by third parties to offer misleading information in their asylum applications.

“Canada is committed to assisting anyone in need of protection. However, encouraging asylum seekers to misrepresent themselves in order to remain in Canada or seek permanent residence would be counter to the goals of Canada’s immigration system,” Miller wrote in a letter to John Murray, president and CEO of the CICC.

Miller ascribed the surge in asylum applications to bogus allegations allegedly sponsored by dishonest immigration advisers.

Drawing on anecdotal evidence from departmental officials, he indicated that conditions in the source countries have remained substantially unchanged, implying that external instructions may play a big role.

According to Miller, some students have been instructed to file asylum petitions when they arrive in Canada, usually during the first year.

Immigration has become a hot-button topic in Canada, and as federal elections approach, the Trudeau government is seeing an increase in anti-immigrant sentiment.

Canadians are furious that international students who should have the necessary finances to obtain a student visa and reside in Canada are suddenly appealing for asylum, which pays them $ 224.00 per day for food and shelter.

Trudeau Broke the Immigration System

The Trudeau government’s immigration system is entirely broken, according to the Globe and Mail, due to uncontrolled consultants, poor governance, and political correctness.

It said that the Canadian colleges with the highest number of asylum seekers this year also have the largest international student populations in the country.

Six of the top ten colleges are in Ontario, with Conestoga College (520), Seneca College (490), and Niagara College (410) having the highest numbers of asylum seekers in 2024.

While some university representatives expressed surprise at the amount of asylum seekers coming from their campuses, others denied any knowledge of the situation.

The increase in asylum seekers coincides with a roughly 50% decline in study permits predicted in Canada this year, a result of various policy reforms targeted at reducing the number of temporary residents in the nation.

In September 2024, the Canadian government cut the objective for international study permits by 10%, from 485,000 to 485,000.

The recent revisions have also flagged over 10,000 overseas student acceptance letters from Canadian colleges as potentially fraudulent.
